  1. Some thoughts after the very rewarding workshop Saturday.
I feel the workshop format greatly enriches the Playback experience for everyone involved – the Troupe and the other participants – and would like to suggest that you should be open to letting your format of the ‘performances’ evolve into evenings that are more inclusive of the whole audience (breaking down our ‘trained’ expectations of being entertained instead of being part of the whole experience) but also still honour the expertise of the troupe which you develop through your weekly workshopping together. One suggestion might be to change to the longer 6 pm to 9 pm format (perhaps with music from 5:30), and using the extra first hour – and perhaps a bit more for activities that involve everyone (preferably in a circle as space permits) – and then have the more formal part of the evening alternating between ‘troupe only’ activities, and ones where the audience participation (or smaller group work) is more actively encouraged.

    Just some food for thought…

Congratulations to you all for creating a very special experience for us all,

    Joyce Newell

    • Thanks, Joyce, for your excellent feedback and great suggestions.
I’ve passed them on to the troupe – and I hope we can do even some of them.
      Kind regards,
      Mark

  2. Hi Playback Troupe,

Again a heartfelt thanks for a great workshop and evening performance. It is good to see the troupe growing in numbers and confidence.

I found the topic ‘Transformations’ although on the surface interesting, very difficult to find an example of in my own life to share – perhaps as transformation so often comes very gradually.

I have however, the day after, just realised that I have just discovered some talks and podcasts featuring Ian McGilchrist, an English philosopher, who shares some very intriguing and exciting thoughts that help explain mankind’s current dilemmas in a useful and positive manner – and perhaps also the magic of Playback theatre, especially for your interactions within the Playback Company, and our personal journey of transformation during our lifetimes. Ian proposes that humanities behavior can be explained by the interaction of our left and right brains – and that we currently have lost contact with the much more nuanced and sensitive right brains. I suspect this is already part of Playback philosophy as you seemed to be aware of ‘thinking too much’ – but you might enjoy exploring some of Ian’s work for more thoughts on this affects how our whole world is unfolding.
